CREATE

Firm: Lastras de Gertler Landscape Architecture Category: Environmental Solutions Jurors’ Comments: This one does a unique job of using and interacting with stormwater and primary circulation routes.   I do like the way that the bridges happen, very much a celebration of the basin.

Hillcrest Pride Flag and Monument

Firm: Carson Douglas Landscape Architecture Category: Pro Bono Jurors’ Comments: I really love the black and white image of the donor tiles. The paving and concrete balls gives you a sense of the true design and construction efforts that went into it. I love the story how they met with the planning commissioner who denied [...]

LIFT

Firm: Lastras de Gertler Landscape Architecture Category: Construction Detailing Jurors’ Comments: [I like] using that handicap extension of the handrail, turning it into a bench. Some really compelling things with the stormwater and the layout. Pretty tight and well detailed.

North River Farms

Firm: SWA Group Category: Planning and Analysis Jurors’ Comments: This hit home in terms of the understanding and connection between agriculture and community.  Love the idea of expressing the farm to table movement and having a newfound respect for the agricultural landscape as a beautiful landscape.

Santa Ynez Ranch

Firm: Carson Douglas Landscape Architecture Category: Single Family Jurors’ Comments: When I see this high end residence, I’m so enamored of the work. For these designers to be able to execute at this level is pretty phenomenal. They get kudos on the environmental side of the scoring. Rustic feel, congruent materials, hard not to be [...]

Seaside Trails

Firm: Grounded Landscape Architecture Category: Pro Bono Jurors’ Comments: This is a heck of a pro bono undertaking, from conceptual design to construction docs and permit processing. This is the type of project that we look to engage all different generations of the communities. It takes a brownfield site to turn into an incredible trail [...]

The Grove – Viasat

Firm: GroundLevel Landscape Architecture Category: Commercial Jurors’ Comments: There’s a welcoming, nurturing quality to this with a unique palette that works really well. Maturity of the plant material helps sell this, defines those spaces very nicely, makes you want to use it. Definitely an amenity for the employees.

UCSD Tata Hall for the Sciences

Firm: Spurlock Landscape Architecture Category: Institutional Jurors’ Comments: What impressed me about it were these bridge walkways that criss-crossed through the open area. The juxtaposition of the natural elements, stormwater basin, against the architectural heavy glazing is stunning, really great qualities from a planting perspective, striking against that tech campus.

Zapo Street Midcentury House

Firm: Grain Landscape Architecture Category: Historic Restoration and San Diego Landmark Jurors’ Comments: It kept with the mid-century style with the plant palette and the subtle terracing. It's interesting how they talk about the center line of the room aligned with the sunset on summer solstice.  Kind of like the Salk institute.

Cal Poly Pomona Student Services Building

Firm: Spurlock Landscape Architecture Category: Institutional Jurors’ Comments: There are a lot of butterflies and life in this area.  It just felt good to walk through it. Gorgeous with the salvias and the organic retaining wall.  Really compelling  are the grasses in the foreground with the mounding and where the building mirrors the mounding in [...]

Del Mar City Hall

Firm: Spurlock Landscape Architecture Category: Public and Municipal Jurors’ Comments: Pretty interesting functions for a civic center, farmers market and sunset viewing.  Almost like those uses upstage the actual civic function.

Del Mar Residence

Firm: GroundLevel Landscape Architecture Category: Single Family Jurors’ Comments: It's a small site but it packs a punch.   The olive tree in the middle was field grown and they brought it in.  Really impressive.  It’s a beautiful project.  The use of the planters and pottery is the perfect scale, everything just clicks.

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park

Firm: Coastal Sage Landscape Architecture Category: Historic Restoration and San Diego Landmark Jurors’ Comments: How do you blend accessibility in with current standards for historical restoration, and interpret the original intent?   It's hard to do with landscape because the landscape expires and is dynamic, or there aren’t enough good historic records.

Richard R. Oliphant Elementary School

Firm: LPA Design Studios Category: Institutional Jurors’ Comments: I’m happy to see concrete versus asphalt. I like the terracing.  I like the DG. Generous spacing of terraced seating prevents children from kicking each other in the back.  Love the chalk boards. I especially liked the arching chalk board that gives the kids an artistic easel [...]

Solana Beach Residential

Firm: Grounded Landscape Architecture Category: Single-Family Jurors’ Comments: This is a dazzling project. I want to live there, the detailing is superb, vertical space of the spa and stepping stones. They thought this through and I love seeing that. As tightly controlled as it is, they’ve allowed the plant material to run wild which complements [...]

Terra-farm and Eco Resort

Firm: Grounded Landscape Architecture Category: Unbuilt Works Jurors’ Comments: It's refreshing to see a project where site planning is a huge component of it where you can see all the systems and overlay components that lend itself to site design. Its proximity to Silicon Valley really makes it fit

UCSD Health, Jacobs Medical Center

Firm: Pamela Burton and Company Category: Institutional Jurors’ Comments: There’s a lot going on, which is interesting: Extensive planting which, when it fills in, will have a really nice quality to it. I quite like the detailing.  You can see there are human scale moments, serpentine benches, visual screen on interior courtyard and planting approach [...]
