ASLA’s Emerging Professionals are making an impact as we head toward National Landscape Architecture month and all the exciting Spring and Summer events to come. The new year brought on a fresh wave of participation from members including the much welcomed volunteering of Katie Hartman as committee Vice-Chair. We are happy to have you on board, Katie, and look forward to a dynamic year of committee growth and development.

Our first meeting of 2015 was held in February at Urban Arena’s office in Sorrento Valley with much enthusiasm. We had an eager handful of EPs volunteer to perform charrette-style client consultations alongside licensed Landscape Architects at the Spring Home and Garden Show in March – an idea initiated by President Elect, Rich Risner, who has always been invested in the EPC. This development took our participation at the show to a whole new level by introducing a mentorship element as the EPs put their on-the-spot design skills to work and learned from our most talented chapter members (See photo taken by Rich Risner).

A few exciting events for EPs coming soon include:

1) LARE Sections 1 and 2 review sessions at the Mission Valley Library Saturday March 21st 3:00-5:00PM

2) Irrigation manufacturing facility tour hosted by one of our long-time sponsors, Hunter Industries at their headquarters in San Marcos Friday March 27th at 12:00 followed by a “social” hour at the Stumblefoot Brewing Company down the street

Signups are going well for our new mentorship program as well. We have great deal of mentors participating with a wide range of specialties and many enthused mentees signing up for the great opportunity. If you are an ASLA-SD member and are interested in becoming a mentor or mentee please email Kristen Koehrn at krkoehrn@gmail.com with your name and industry specialty. A kickoff event for the program where the mentors and mentees will meet is being held this May. Stay tuned on our website for details.

The EPC holds our meetings every other month at various Landscape Architecture offices around the county, so please join us if you would like to meet other professionals starting out in the business like yourself. Our April meeting will be on the 8th from 6:00-7:00PM. Stay tuned to our website for location information.
