SUMMARY:PARK(ing) Day Webinar
DESCRIPTION:ASLA San Diego + San Diego Green Building Council\npresent\nPARK(ing) Day 2021 Demonstration\nHave you heard of the annual international event called Park(ing) Day?  The intention of this one-day event in September is to demonstrate how much outdoor urban space is dedicated to private vehicles\, rather than open public space for people.  Since its inception in 2005\, it has served as a form of “tactical urbanism”\, to design and install a small parklet over one or more parking spaces within a street right-of-way. It’s also a lot of fun! \nDuring World Landscape Architecture Month in April\, the San Diego Chapter of ASLA is running an evening webinar\, inviting organizations to learn more about how to plan and install an impactful\, successful\, and legal Park(ing) Day event.  Closer to the date of this year’s Park(ing) Day event on September 17th\, our Chapter will further promote all the individual parklets throughout San Diego County.  The intention is to communicate this as a unified\, larger effort\, to boost the visibility and impact of this event. \nWe hope to see you on April 15th! \nRegistration link   https://bpt.me/5082935

SUMMARY:A Pop-Up Picnic - Hosted by Spruce and Gander- Client Appreciation Event - August 14th\, Noon- 4 P.M.
DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited\nAugust 14\, 2022\, Noon – 4pm\nHosted by Spruce & Gander\nRancho Guejito 17224 San Pasqual Valley Rd\, Escondido\, CA 92027\nBe Our Guest\nCome join us for a relaxing escape into 23\,000 acres of scenic groves and vineyards of historical Rancho Guejito. At this family-friendly event\, enjoy live music\, lawn games\, and hayride tours through the ranch while being serenaded by the music of an acoustic guitar. Lunch is on us; we will have gourmet pizzas baked in a wood fire oven. While you picnic\, take in the outdoors\, sip the afternoon away with refreshments\, and host organic wine tastings. \nAn ASLA Partnered Event\nSpruce & Gander has partnered with our local ASLA Chapter in San Diego to spread the word about our Popup Picnic. The first of its kind will surely become an annual tradition. As a trade show alternative\, for those who perhaps can’t make it to the ASLA EXPO held in San Francisco\, you will view our products firsthand while basking in the sun and connect in person with clients and friends at this incredible outdoor treasure. A client appreciation event. \nA Rich History\nRead more about what makes Rancho Guejito so special here \, or click here for a direct link to our RSVP \nOn September 20\, 1845\, Jose Maria Orozco\, a customs agent\, boarded his horse-drawn wagon and headed north from Old Town San Diego to what is now Valley Center to claim a piece of land covering three square leagues\, approximately 13\,298 acres. \nIn 1845\, California was not a part of the United States. It was still a distant province of Mexico. The property was a land grant to Orozco from Pio Pico\, the Mexican Provincial Governor. \nPio Pico had handed out similar vast parcels to other friends and patrons. It was one of 800 so-called Mexican Land Grant ranches awarded during a romantic period of history known as the “Days of the Dons.” Orozco named the place Rancho Guejito. \nUntouched by time\, the property has been described as a ranch “that cattlemen see only in their dreams” and a place “where the old west is alive and well.” A rancher who ran cattle on the site for decades declared\, “This is where the asphalt ends and the Old West begins.” The ranch has grown over the years from its original historic size of 13\,298 acres to approximately 23\,000 (36 square miles). The largest single addition came in 1940 when the adjoining Maxcy Vineyard Ranch at 4\,500 acres was annexed to Guejito. The most recent acquisition was the purchase of the equally historic 100-acre Rockwood Ranch in 2006. The Rockwood farmhouse\, built in the early 1890’s by Bernard B. Rockwood\, is now the location for Rancho Guejito Vineyard’s Tasting room. \nPlease RSVP BY August 12 \nExclusively for clients\, not open to other trades

SUMMARY:Fall Lecture - Wet + Dry: Landscapes of Resilience and Material Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Fall Lecture – Wet + Dry: Landscapes of Resilience and Material Exploration\nSpeaker\, Roderick Wyllie\, is a Principal with Surfacedesign\, a landscape architecture and urban design firm based in San Francisco.\n \nThis internationally award-winning practice focuses on creating dynamic parks\, campuses\, plazas\, waterfronts\, civic landscapes and private gardens. The firm’s approach emphasizes and celebrates the unique context and imaginative potential of each project. The studio’s design process is rooted in asking novel questions and listening to a site and its users – a process that has led to engaging and inspiring landscapes that are rugged\, contemporary\, and crafted. \nIncreasingly\, water has become a central focus of all landscape interventions. Holistic\, systems-based design thinking that actively engages water extremes—from drought to flooding/sea level rise— is at the core of Surfacedesign’s practice. Challenging the formal manifestations of municipal guidelines and standards for water management\, each project engages water as an integral design element. Roderick will share a range of work from the residential to the infrastructural. These works celebrate water systems and explore how planting\, topography and cultural narratives can reinforce water resiliency. \nFree to ASLA San Diego members (Register by September 27)  $20 Non-Members \nShare Event Flyer at this LINK \nRegister at this LINK

SUMMARY:Firescaping and the Miyawaki Afforestation Method Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Firescaping and the Miyawaki Afforestation Method\nHosted by the SDASLA Climate Action Committee\nFriday\, February 9 @ 12 pm – Free Webinar\nRegister by February 8 to get Zoom Meeting Link\nShare the event flyer at this LINK\nPresenter – Dr. Trevor Maynard\, Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineer with Extropy Research\nWe’re kicking off the new year with an engaging talk and an exciting project. Our featured discussion will delve into the dual topics of Firescaping and the Miyawaki Afforestation Method. The inspiration for this conversation arose during our exploration of the Miyawaki Method\, promoted for its efficient approach to cultivating native\, biodiverse forest ecosystems. This method involves densely and randomly planting all layers of a forest simultaneously\, aligning with the natural succession stages of a forest. \nOur talk will address how this method\, originally developed in a temperate climate\, can be adapted to our Mediterranean climate. We’ll explore where our fire regulations permit the establishment of such densely intermixed plantings. To kick off the discussion\, Dr. Trevor Maynard\, a Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineer with Extropy Research\, will provide an overview of California’s current fire regulations and Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ). He’ll offer insights into the evolution of these regulations and how our profession can contribute valuable input to regulators. \nWe invite you to set aside an hour on Friday\, February 9\, at noon to join us and actively participate in this enlightening conversation. RSVP at the following link and well send you the Zoom link:  https://bpt.me/6205324 \nWe are embarking on the exciting venture of planting a miniforest in the Miyawaki style based on the insights gathered from our talk. While we have a designated test site\, we welcome suggestions for additional sites. The ideal location would be a neglected or underutilized urban area outside of a Very High FHSZ. We are also seeking a local user group or organization interested in partnering with us for the installation and maintenance of this project. \nYour participation is key\, so let’s come together and make a positive impact on our environment. Mark your calendar and join us to learn more.
