September 2014

•9/3 Design Awards Committee Meeting - Location – Karl Strauss/Sorrento Mesa – Volunteers contact Joy Lyndes @ jlyndes@coastal-sage.com

9/4 Executive Reports Sent for Board Agenda

•9/9 Lecture Series: Mario Schjetnan from Mexico City - Balboa Park, Casa del Prado, Room 104/Library (near Junior Ballet), 6 p.m. reception, 7 p.m. lecture.

Mario is CEO of Grupo de Diseno Urbano (GDU) located in Mexico City. For 37 years, the firm has executed a wide range of projects, including diverse typologies and scales in Architecture, Urban design, and Landscape Architecture, and have been distinguished with national and international awards in all.

Mario’s best and more recognized work has been in projects in the public realm, in particular the design of large urban parks like Parque Tezozomoc in Mexico City, El Cedazo Park in Aguascalientes, both with President's Awards of Excellence from ASLA, and Parque Ecológico Xochimilco, which was distinguished with Harvard's Green Prize in Urban Design.

In Architecture, several of his buildings have been recognized, such as the Archaeological Museum of the Northern Cultures of Mexico in Paquimé, which was awarded the "Gran Premio Latinoamericano" in the Buenos Aires Biennale and his recent project in the Archaeological and Ecological Reserve of Bahias de Huatulco in Oaxaca.

Mario views public parks and spaces as an expression for environmental justice, urban elements of order and reference, of ecological balance, and spaces that make a city “breath.” He works with low budgets, basic materials, and modest details while gaining political/financial support by linking public spaces with much needed infrastructure improvements. His work has expanded to include interventions in several large scale post-industrial projects. Starting with Union Point Park in Oakland California, to the most recent in the transformation of the oil refinery of PEMEX in Mexico City (Azcapotzalco).

Mario has devoted his life to teaching. He has facilitated numerous workshops and studios at several universities including Harvard University, was the director of the School of L.A. at the University of Arizona, and was distinguished with the Federico Mariscal Chair in Architecture from National University of Mexico in 2001. He has been a lecturer at Universities in the USA, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Puerto Rico, Australia, and China.
