LARE Review Update

LARE is changing to an all computer exam. Here is a quick synopsis of the changes:

  1. The exam will consist of 4 sections, all of which will be administered at computer test centers and will make the exam more accessible for candidates.
  2. The content currently tested in graphic format will, in the new exam, consist of multiple-choice questions and advanced item types. Advanced item types require candidates to work with on-screen graphics. Examples of these new item types will be available in Spring 2012.
  3. There will be two administrations of the current Multiple-choice exams (September 2011 and March 2012) and two administrations of the current Graphic exams (December 2011 and June 2012) prior to the transition to the new exam.
  4. We are encouraging new candidates to take Sections A & B of the current exam as they will translate directly to Sections 1 and 2 in the new exam.
  5. Additionally taking Sections A & B now will have financial benefits as well because the cost per section of the new exam will be higher as the development costs are spread over 4 sections versus 5 in the current exam.
  6. Sections C, D, and E transference is not clear to me at this time, but I have a question into CLARB and will clarify in another email.

For additional information on the transition, visit the CLARB website. For further assistance, CALL 571-432-0332 or by email at info@clarb.org. You can also participate in their Facebook discussions.

Also LAND (ASLA's web letter) has provided a good bit of information: http://www.asla.org/land/LandArticle.aspx?id=32227 on the timeline.

Master of Landscape Architecture Degree: NewSchool of Architecture & Design

Beginning in the winter quarter, the NewSchool will offer two new degree programs, Master of Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Construction Management to help meet growing demand for qualified professionals in these fields.

The Master of Landscape Architecture's curriculum allows students to take advantage of growing opportunities in the fields of urban development, brownfield restoration and urban ecology. The program is closely linked to NewSchool's well-established, NAAB-accredited architecture programs, providing direct collaboration between landscape architecture students and the architecture program in areas including urban boundaries and the relationships between the urban core and the land on which it is built.

For more information about both degree programs, visit www.newschoolarch.edu.

Bachelors Degree of Landscape Architecture Degree: NewSchool of Architecture & Design

Sites of inhabitation situated across ecological boundaries are today under increasing pressure from rapid urbanization, migrations, and expanding demand on resources. What impact will this have on future cities? What solutions do San Diego’s coastal, urban and arid ecologies provide as a living lab for design study and experimentation?

Beginning this fall, NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego will offer a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree program that critically examines these conditions. Through design studios and professional courses, students in this four year under- graduate program will develop skills in digital technologies, site engineering and landscape construction practices. This skill set is grounded in theoretical and practical coursework that helps students learn to think critically, act insightfully, and communicate complicated ideas using a variety of media. The program will expand the existing Master of Landscape Architecture degree that was launched last fall.

The program objective is to prepare students who will be able to address the complex and constantly changing conditions of today’s world. This requires developing design and planning responses that are nimble and capable of evolving as situations change, and the development of critical and ethical positions that practice and apply social and professional responsibilities. In an increasingly urban world, the problems of cities will become more significant loci of landscape architectural projects, and the work to resolve these issues will become more crucial than ever.

The four year undergraduate program focuses on sustainable urban environments, how we design and advocate for public spaces, creating new understandings of the ecology of the city, and seeing the relationships between the urban core and the larger landscape that supports it. "It’s extremely important for students to understand what is at stake today, and how their work can truly make a difference in our world," said program chair Leslie Ryan. "And, it’s equally important that students learn how to implement their ideas, because that is how the change will happen."
