Nominate Community Groups for Chapter Grant
Applications Due on August 1
ASLA San Diego awards an annual
$5,000 Grant to a local, worthy, non-profit community
group. The Grant is funded by the Annual Golf Tournament.
Past recipients have included the La Jolla Town Council,
the Point Loma High School Foundation, the San Ysidro
Business Association and the Fallbrook Garden Club.
The purpose of the Grant is to educate
and enhance the community on landscape architecture
and/or environmental issues. Examples on how past monies
have been spent include project design and construction,
the purchase of landscape amenities or for the on-going
maintenance of a project.
We would like your to help to get
the word out about the chapter Grant. If you know of
a Community Group, or if you are part of a Community
Group who could use our Chapter's assistance, please
have them download
an application here, or call Tracy at 619.225.8155
for more information and a copy of the Grant application.
The Grant helps SDASLA by providing
exposure to the Chapter through the projects completed
by local community groups. With our help, many community
groups have seen their projects become reality. This
is truly a way in which we ALL give back to those who
need our assistance. Please help by bringing this to
the attention of those groups who could use our help.

SD/ASLA
Takes on Shelter Project for LA Month
The San Diego Chapter of ASLA is taking on a community
beautification project for the non-profit organization
Center for Community Solutions (CCS). CCS is a non-profit
organization that has been dedicated to helping victims
of domestic violence in San Diego County since 1969
(www.ccssd.org
). Chris Gustard, ASLA, the
chapter's current Past President, is spearheading the
effort as the chapters' primary Landscape Architecture
Month project.
David Salisbury, Business Development
Director of Mintz Levin, a law firm based in Boston
with offices in San Diego, connected SDASLA to CCS who
had the simple request of replacing a large tree at
their North County shelter. The large 24" caliper
tree, that provided shade for the children's play area,
was struck by lightening and had to be removed. The
first request by CCS staff to Mintz Levin was to have
umbrellas donated for the space. Dave suggested instead,
just replacing the large tree and immediately thought
of our Chapter and how we might be able to help.
On January 14, 2008 Chris visited
the shelter with members of CCS and discussed their
needs and developed a wish list of ways to help improve
the quality of life to the shelter's exterior spaces.
Suggestions that came out of the meeting were to install
a large 96" box tree, add more 36" box trees
to the shelter property, replace the children's old
tot lot equipment, add exterior benches and picnic tables
and freshen up the property with new shrubs and mulch.
A rendered concept plan will be put together courtesy
of Gillespie Moody Patterson.
A number of vendors and SD/ASLA
Chapter sponsors have already stepped up to the plate
and committed to helping out on the project including
Pardee Tree Nursery, Brickman Group, Big Trees Nursery,
Quick Crete Products, Coast Recreation and Landscape
Structures, Armstrong Growers and Monrovia and Mintz
Levin. If your company is interested in being involved
by donating funding, goods or services please contact
Chris Gustard. The chapter is also seeking members and
volunteers to help organize and participate in an install.
That date is to be determined. Please contact Chris
Gustard via e-mail at chris@gmplandarch.com
if you are interested in getting involved.

2008
Community Grant - Fallbrook Garden Club
Congratulations to SD/ASLA's 2008 Community Grant recipient
- the Fallbrook Garden Club. The garden club is celebrating
its 76th year of continuous community service by its 250
members since its founding in 1931. The grant funds will
help the club irrigate and landscape a section of the
Fallbrook Elementary School District's La Paloma School
with trees, a new pathway and garden seating area.
Each summer, SD/ASLA distributes
a call for grant entries throughout San Diego County
to encourage community-based organizations to apply
for up to $5,000 in grant funds to assist with projects
in our communities. Past grant recipients include:
- 2007 San Ysidro Business Improvement
District
- 2006 Point Loma High School and
Alumni Foundation
- 2005 Scripps Park Project
- 2004 Azalea Park Neighborhood
Assoc.
- 2003 Casa Familiar Casitas de
las Forecitas
- 2002 Euclid Avenue Revitalization
Committee
We need ASLA members to assist our
Chapter in identifying groups in the community who would
be outstanding recipients for future grants. If you
know of a deserving organization, send us the group's
name, contact person and email or phone information.
Help us help the community by forwarding potential grant
recipient information to Tracy at ASLASD@sbcglobal.net.
Thank you!
